The great ghost are elemental souls and spirit of the jungle, earth and water. These are considered the oldest class of ghost, served as guardian of their realm from outside invasion. These great ghosts protected their environment by punishing those who violate their realm.
The great ghost could appear in forms and change their form at will. They ranged from human like figures such as beautiful princess to semi human look. When angered, they would appear in purely monstrous forms, such as giants with misshapen, headless or limbless bodies. Sharp tooth, pendulous tongue, protruding eyes, glaring red eyes and sharp claws were among favorite features. According to legends, the ghost of the jungle were often beyond human origin. These powerful ghost were regularly appeased with appropriate rituals by farmers and fishing communities who are totally reliant on the land, jungle and sea. But there are few ghosts that ascribe human form. But these semi human entities were often ill fortune incident that sealed their ghostly fate. One such tragic story involving elemental spirit of the jungle is the Hantu Langut, ghost of hunter with the head is that of a dog's. The Hunter (The origin of Hantu Langut)
In the deep jungle of Pahang, lives an orang asli (aborigine) family of hunter/gatherer. One day, the wife sent her husband and son off hunting. But unfortunately for him,he've forgotten to bring along offerings to appease the spirits of the jungle. Therefore, the father and son's hunting expedition had no success. Whilst in the jungle, a leech bit the father's foot. He sliced it into two and marveled at how it became whole again. Having done three times, the father convinced that if his own head were cut off,it could be reattached with the leech's blood. The reluctant son did as he was told but, alas, the head rolled into a hole in the ground. Fearing venomous snakes in the hole, the panic-stricken son cut off the hunting dog's head, fixed it on his father's lifeless body, smeared it with the leeches blood. Just as predicted, the father was revived. However,he was too ashamed of his appearance to return home. He sent his son back, leaving him behind, never to return.Since that time, he has dwelt in the depth of the jungle as Hantu Langut. The headless hunter dog was transformed into Hantu Denai.

Karak Highway Phantom
July 15, 1984; It was quiet on the Karak Highway with only the moon to illuminate the road. It was a full moon that night. A couple with their infant child, was driving back to their home in Kuantan after celebrating a festive night in Kuala Lumpur with friends and families. There was no passing car in sight despite it being a festive night. Approaching a tunnel, the husband lowers the volume of the radio, knowing that the interrupted frequency noise would wake the baby up. It was a long stretch but the tunnel lights gave comfort to the couple. And just for fun, the husband drove zig zag knowing that there were no car from either side. The fun was short lived as they approach the end of the tunnel. There, darkness greets them again.
As they passed the tunnel, the car suddenly jerks and the engine stalled. The car cruised downhill a bit further until they come to a halt on the roadside. The husband was puzzled by this, because he'd already sent the car for repairs, and that everything was in perfect condition before they left for their journey. He restarted the car but to no avail. It was dark the road outside, surrounded by forest. Feeling uneasy, yet the husband got out of his car, asked the wife to lock the door behind him and opened the car hood to check the engine, everything was fine. He got back into the car. They've decided to stay in the car and wait for passer-by to get help. An hour passed, yet there was not a soul in sight. Feeling agitated,he thought about leaving his family behind and walk back the other end of the tunnel to get help but the wife did not agree to this plan, arguing that its not safe out there and that she's more concern with the well being of the child. And so they waited. But out of the darkness, a figure appeared from the forest walking towards the car. They couple saw this, and grew increasingly nervous as the figure approaches ever closer to their vehicle. To their relief, the figure turned out to be an old Orang Asli woman (aborigine). They got out of the car to greet her.The old woman said there is a police station about 2 KM from the tunnel on the other end and offered to go to the station to inform the policemen about their situation. The husband suggested he'd go instead while she accompanies his family. But the old woman declined. She said it was unwise for him to be out in the open on this particular night. She insisted he stay behind in the car with the family and added that they are much safer especially with the child in hand. The husband caved and did as he was told. So, they waited. After an hour , still no sign of the old woman or any car approaching. It suddenly occurred to the husband that something might have happen to the old woman. He feared that the she might have fallen or injured herself on the way. He decided to go after her. The wife had an uneasy feeling about him leaving and pleaded him to stay in the car, but he made up his mind. So he locked the door behind him and quickly walk back towards the tunnel. The wife, looking through the rear mirror sees the silhouette of the husband disappear into the darkness. The wife sits quietly, nervous, while holding her the sleeping child. Then the child begins to cry loudly,as if startled by something. She tried to comfort the child but the baby cried intensively. Suddenly she heard a loud shriek from behind the car and turned her head to look. But before she could see anything, something heavy came crashing down the car roof. The car shook violently, followed by screams and shrieks.Feeling helpless, the wife holds on as hard as he could protecting the screaming baby from whatever is attacking the car. And then it stopped. The car was not moving anymore, but something's still on the roof. She did not move. Suddenly she saw flashes of blue and red lights. It was coming from a patrol car. The police car drove pass them and parked their vehicle in from of the couple's car. She could see a policeman getting out of the car and walking towards her vehicle. But the policeman suddenly stalled , withdrew his weapon and called out his partner .The other policemen, startled, also withdrew his gun.Looking at one another, they called out to her asked her to step out of the vehicle quietly, and don't look around while she did so. She got out of the car with the baby and walked towards the two policemen. When she was at a safe distance, she finally looked back towards her car to see . To her horror, she saw the lifeless body of her husband on the roof, and towering over his body, dark figure of a phantom with red glowing eyes, shrieking, devouring his flesh. She screamed. |
